Welcome to The Hartland

The Hartland is our family blog. This is where we'll share what is happening in our lives, big and small, with those who care. Enjoy!!

It’s almost halfway into June, summer isn’t officially here yet but I already feel summer vacation slipping through our fingers. Time just flies this time of year and I know I’ve let enough go by since our last post so let me bring you up to date as to what has been going on around our household!

Jason purchased a “new” tractor. I have new in quotes because it is the same type of tractor we already have (from 1960’s) but a few years newer and in better shape. Jason and Masamo took an hour trip (each way) to check it out and pick it up. Now it’s not the best looking thing in the world but because Jason is the one who cuts our 2+ acres of grass, I can’t really complain about what he wants to use to get the job done.

The new craze of kids has also hit our household, Sillybanz. If you’re unfamiliar with them they’re multicolored rubber bracelets that when you take them off they spring back into the shape that they were before you put them on (i.e. animals, cars, etc.) I’m happy to indulge the kids in this one because it’s relatively inexpensive. My favorite banz are the animals. We’re not going out of our way to find them and the fad is already loosing its luster for my kids. Here’s Ella wearing her collection.

We had to take our beloved cat, Ghia, to the vet recently because he has been losing weight steadily for the past year. He is 14 ½ years old and so we were not too optimistic about his chases. Once at the vet he was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, which apparently is not that uncommon in older cats. He has a nodule on his thyroid and his T4 count in his blood was almost 4 times the normal limit. He was started immediately on some heart medication and a thyroid medication.
It’s been several weeks now and we can see so many differences in him already. He is not anxious to eat, he is gaining weight and is just generally our loving cat again. They’re saying surgery will probably be necessary in the future but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I have been taking it easy in my flower garden this year. I’m in maintaining mode, there’s just too much on my plate for anything else. BUT, I have had voles take up residence recently (or maybe not so recently and I’ve just started to notice them). Voles are basically mice that live outside. They have taken over the old mole runs in my garden and have opening to the tunnels all over the place. They’re eating at the roots and tender shoots of some of my flowers so that they cannot grow! Rrrrrrr, this makes me angry. It’s been war. I’ve been trapping them with mouse traps and (hopefully) been killing them with Juicy Fruit gum (it “gums” up their system and they die). I’ve also been blocking up the entrances to the remaining tunnels, which I can’t squish, with soil. This seems to be working but I have no real way to know if they’re really dying or just moving somewhere else!

Masamo loves to play in water and so recently on a particularly hot day I got out our little pool and him and David get in and play. They had a fun time for over an hour splashing and pouring.

Masamo has also found that one of his favorite outside toys is a spray bottle. He will stay occupied for 20+ minutes just going around spraying things. We’ve set two main rules, no spray bottle in the house and no spraying people!

In addition to the pool and spray bottle, we’ve got a unique feature to our old farm house, a working water pump. It is one of my favorite things about our house. The kids never tire of going over to it and playing with it and it comes in handy when I just need a little water in my watering can and don’t want to turn on the hose for the water. Here is Masamo playing with Boppy and the water pump.

Near the end of the school year, David’s kindergarten class was learning about different jobs/careers. I surprised David when I arrived at his school to talk about being a nurse. He had no idea that I was coming in to talk to his class and was very happy to see me when I arrived! I was a little apprehensive about my time with his class at first. I’m not fond of speaking in front of groups and I know just as well as the next mother how unpredictable children can be. Despite all this I had a good time. I went into the classroom with my scrubs on and a bag of “tools” I use when working in the operating room. I donned my hat, shoe covers and mask for them and it seemed to entrance them as to how funny I looked. I also tried to do a little education should any of them have to go in for surgery but I’m not really sure how much they picked up. The kids seemed to be more interested in telling me about any person they knew who had broken a bone or been to surgery. Their attention spans are short and hopefully I did some good for the nursing profession in my short time.

Recent conversation with David, we’ve had many similar to this one (I think he’s trying to expand his vocabulary).
David – “I feel glum.”
Me – “You do? What does glum mean?”
David – “I don’t know, but I feel glum.”

This past Memorial Day weekend we spend camping at our land. There’s not much to say about the weekend, which was beautiful! I’ll let the pictures and video do the talking. One story that I will share is that if we ever lost sight of Masamo we could find him sitting on one of the two small quads we have for the younger kids to ride. He would try and start it himself (which he cannot do, and neither can I) and sit there and just stare into space. I didn’t like him just sitting there by himself and so would redirect him to something else to do or else join him on the quads and we’d talk. He did get to actually ride the quad a couple times but only while under both Jason and my supervision. Jason had a dog leash attached to the back of it (yes this does work because the motor is not strong) and I directed his steering. He’s got some learning to do but the passion is definitely there!

These photos show the kids watching a box turtle that they found. They’re waiting for it to come out of it’s shell.

This video is of Masamo showing his “mad” face, you might recognize it from the first photos we received of him.

It was hot this weekend and almost everyone (meaning not me) got in the kiddie pool to cool off, whether they really wanted to or not.

Since the weather has warmed up and Memorial Day passed, these two facts equal that Mimi and Boppy’s pool is open! We went over recently to take Masamo swimming in a big pool for the first time. I am happy to report that he absolutely LOVED it! He loved holding onto Jason or me while we walked around the pool. He loved splashing, floating in a ring (holding Mommy’s hands), jumping into my arms into the pool, blowing bubbles in the water, and having Daddy swim under the water and touch his legs. Here are some pics from that day………..

Another first for Masamo was going to a Reds game! We were given some tickets by some friends of ours who could not use them. He was captivated by the big buildings downtown and seeing the boats on the river. At one point he saw a speedboat going down the river and called it an airplane. I corrected him and told him it was a boat. He came back with “Not boat, airplane boat!” I’ll give him that one, it was going quickly and sounded like an airplane!
The Reds did manage to hit a homerun which means they set off some fireworks (another first for Masamo). He just sat very still in Jason’s lap and looked like a deer in the headlights. They were loud but unfortunately not too bright as the sun was still shining. He didn’t seem scared just surprised!

The first day after school was out for summer, Mimi, Masamo, Ella, David and I went to a local butterfly show at the conservatory. I had not been to one of these before but combining my love of flowers and butterflies in one place was, to me, the recipe for a good time.
I must say, I don’t think one of us was disappointed. Everyone but Masamo held a butterfly (and that is only because he didn’t want to touch them). There were butterflies EVERYWHERE in the specified room. They gave us artificial flowers to hold to attract the butterflies and at one point had a lady there with a number of butterflies in a mesh-type box and she would take your flower and get a butterfly on it for you.

Afterwards we went and let the kids get their face or arm painted. They also had many other things that they could have done but our time was limited and the crowd was growing. Here are some pics of the show and the face/arm painting.

After some very long patient waiting, Emily is finally having her bathroom remodeled. Emily has a bathroom attached directly to her bedroom and ever since we moved in she has not been able to use it. The toilet was broken, the shower a mess and well, we have another perfectly good bathroom upstairs that frankly she is the only one who uses. However, my mother was insistent upon us renovating this bathroom and so without further ado we’ve started the process. Here are some shots of before and during what we have accomplished thus far.

WAIT! First let me give you a layout of the before….
Looking into the door you are looking straight at the window. To your left of the window is a closet and to your immediate left (across from the closet) is a double sink with a large medicine cabinet/mirror. To the right of the window is a shower and your immediate right is the toilet. OK, here are the pics.
BEFORE:

After the destruction of part of the closet wall.

After having moved the electric for the light and building the frame for the newer bigger closet!

Drywall and mud are up and on the new wall!

That's all the progress we've made so far. More to come in the future as time allows!

More on getting to know Masamo:

*He loves to sleep in! Very predictable with his sleeping patterns, thank goodness!
*His potty training is going well. When tired or I forget to take him in a reasonable amount of time he may have an accident. For the most part he is telling us when he needs to go and I’m very proud of his progress.
*He is very into quads and monster trucks at this point. He’s usually carrying around one or both of them and playing with them. Also, when he goes to bed he reads a book all about trucks.
*He’s stringing together up to six or seven words in a sentence. He doesn’t do this all the time, mostly two or three word sentences but he can do it if he has the words!
*The most recent word he has added to his vocabulary is fire hydrant. He knows what one is and is constantly pointing them out to me when we’re in the car (along with every truck and motorcycle he sees).
*He likes to play “up down” in the car. We live where there are a lot of small hills and whenever we go up one he says “up” and when we go down one he says “down” and when we turn the car he says “turn”. It’s cute but the backseat driver thing is easily annoying. I bite my tongue and play along though, what more can a mother do?

Here is a video of Masamo that I found from earlier this spring. It’s so cute I had to include it. At one point he is wiping off the kisses that Emily is giving him and then once says “Ouch” in response. Again, we had to turn the view screen so he could see what was being recorded. I can’t help but laugh.

Moving Right Along

Well, life is moving right along for our family. It has been almost three months since we welcomed home Masamo and it is absolutely amazing to me how he has just blossomed.

We started out with another visit to the Land. Masamso recognized it as soon as we were there and as last time, had a wonderful time relaxing and playing all weekend long. Jason's mother even got to hold Masamo by the campfire singing "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" to him until he fell asleep. Jason's parents are also having a large structure built over and around their trailer to protect it from the elements. Here is a snapshot of the progress that had been made when we were there.

We also had time to "seal" our trailer. Jason put sealer on the roof and then inside we sealed up every crack and crevice we could find that any little critter might use to enter our trailer. The kids played a lot and also had time for some quad riding. Masamo loves the quads and could be found over by them either sitting on them and/or trying to start them to drive himself around. He'll be ready to ride on his own (with supervision) before we know it!

I decided that this past week I was ready to try my hand at some Ethiopian cooking. Mind you, I chose the easiest recipe I could find. I ended up making red lentils and an American version of injera (a spongy flat bread that Ethiopian eat their meals with) along with rice. Once done making the lentils I gave Masamo a taste (being the expert of the group) and his eyes got very wide and he ran to his seat at the table to eat dinner! I took that as a good sign. He, Jason and I enjoyed eating the lentils and injera while the other three took their obligatory bites and then scraped their plates. Oh well, maybe it will grow on them but I will be trying more recipes in the future. Masamo deserves to have his heritage celebrated and this is just one way we can acknowledge it.

It has become a very common site around our house to have one or more superheros visiting our house. David got a number of costumes for Christmas and has of late been wearing them around the house. Here he is as (cue the music) Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na,na, na, na, na.... BATMAN!!!

Masamo has been home for almost 3 months now and I returned to work (one day a week) the beginning of this month. I will go back up to two days starting in June. I was a little nervous going in, not for myself but for Masamo. Jason was home with him but I am the one who wakes him up in the morning and gets him ready for the day. However, when I called home at lunchtime Jason told me that Masamo hadn't mentioned me at all and was acting perfectly naturally. Well, so much for being missed! Actually when I got home from work I was greeted by a very enthusiastic Masamo who ran to me with open arms and was screaming "MOMMY!!!". He did this twice after I got in the door and it just made my day!

We have a new routine that Jason and I are trying to institute in our household, it's called "Family Cleaning Night". We've done it for two Mondays now without a hitch and hope it can continue for a long time to come. I've been finding it hard to keep up with my regular cleaning and laundry schedule since Masamo has been home and with my returning to work I have even less time to devote to it. Soooo, in order to deal with this Jason and I came up with a plan to divide and conquer. I have listed the regular chores I do and then we each pick one (or two if they're small and quick) and get them done all together at the same time. This takes us less than an hour to do and Masamo even getting in on the fun. Here he is helping me to vacuum.

This past weekend Jason went to Michigan with a friend to watch the SAE international competition. So, that left me at home with the four kids. We made the best of it though. Saturday was beautiful and so we headed to a new park and followed it up with ice cream!

Emily texting at the park

Emily finally decided to join in on the fun at the park!

A couple new things concerning Masamo.

I've decided it's time to try and potty train him. He has always done #2 for us and told us when he needs to go but I decided to put him to the test. I have been doing this with very low pressure on him. I simply put him on the potty and thankfully he has not once objected to sitting on it. I have been putting him on every hour and when he does #1 he gets rewarded by a few jellybeans (using up leftover Easter candy). We've only been at it for four days now but he is catching on quick. If he has wet himself he seems to stop himself and come and tell me and then finishes on the potty! I hope the progress continues, he seemed more than ready to take the plunge, he's doing great so far though!

Lastly, Masamo likes to help getting himself ready in the morning. One of the cutest things he does is to "fluff" his hair with his pick before I put his hair moisturizer on.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I want echo what one of our fellow Ethiopian adoptive parents has said on her blog and say that I wonder what trauma Masamo has dealt with in his short life. How would any one of us handle having our entire world turned upside down? Having all that we know, all that is familiar and safe suddenly gone. Being told that no, our family will not be coming back, that we've been let go by them to be raised and cared for by strangers. Your trust in things ever being safe again is broken, life will never be the same. Those strangers look different, speak differently and the place that they take you, so far away from home, holds nothing that is familiar. You have to learn all new ways, eat new food, learn a new language. How would you feel in the middle of the night when you wake up? Scared? Lonely? Hopeless?
And yet, there is hope. There is a God who is watching over us. He has all things in His hands and HE is in control. He can heal the hearts of the brokenhearted, mend the broken trust of those who doubt, and give us a family and home that will never, ever be taken away. We hope and pray that God will heal Masamo's heart, mend his broken trust, and that he will become a part of God's family and someday go home to Heaven where he will be met with open arms and every one of his tears will be wiped away. God gave us this exciting opportunity to help just one orphan, to welcome him into our family, to make a difference in his life.
Every little smile, every hug, every kiss, every time I hear "Mommy" come out of his mouth gives me hope and faith that God will heal him.
"Never take advantage of any widow or orphan. If you do and they cry out to me, you can be sure that I will hear their cry." Exodus 22:22-23.
He has heard Masamo's cries, He knows his pain and his plight. He is the "Father to the fatherless, defender of widows — this is God, whose dwelling is holy. God places the lonely in families."Psalms 68:5-6.
Jason and I cannot explain to Masamo why his birth parents decided to let him go other than to give him the little bit of information they gave. Having been and seen Ethiopia firsthand we can testify that it would be very hard to raise a family in such extreme poverty. We do know that God has a plan for this little boy and our family has a front seat to see what God will do with this precious child.
Another week (or two) and it’s time for a new blog update! Here’s what’s been happening around our house!
The Zoo Redo!
We visited the zoo again! The kids and I visited the zoo again but this time went along with Jason’s parents. We did this on Earth Day when the admission was FREE after 5pm! Here are some pics from our trip!
A little bit of camping – In the LIVING ROOM!
We decided to do something different for the kids and on a Friday night (when Emily was away at a friend’s house). We spiced things up and camped in the living room! Jason and I set up the smaller of our two tents in the living room and were amazed at how quickly this went when you didn’t have to stake it down and put on the rain fly! We made the inside nice and cozy with plenty of blankets and bean bags and settled in to watch a movie. This was made complete with popcorn and drinks all around. We ended the evening by allowing the kids to sleep in the tent overnight. Jason and I stayed in the tent just until everyone was asleep and then escaped ten or so feet away to our own bedroom to sleep in comfort.
Emily’s birthday dinner
As is custom, we had dinner for Emily on her birthday. Instead of me cooking for everyone we went out to Bob Evan’s (Emily’s choice). We had a good time with family and Emily had a good time getting a lot of nice presents and cash!
Tractor Riding
Ella, David and Masamo each got a lesson in tractor riding! Masamo helped Jason mow the grass in the backyard and eventually fell asleep at the wheel. David had done the same thing at Masamo’s age; it was cute to see him snuggled up in Jason’s lap. Ella and David also each got a turn at driving the tractor by themselves with Jason supervising. I was going to include a video here but it wouldn't upload for some reason, maybe another time!
A visit to the “ribber”
We visited the small local river this past Friday night. Masamo pronounces it the “ribber” instead of river. We took a picnic of McDonald’s and then set off down to explore. Ella and David spent their time searching for fossils and had brought along a book bag full of supplies. This book bag included a notebook for taking notes, paintbrushes for dusting off dirt, magnifying glass, a dinosaur book to identify fossils and many other necessary items that were essential for their impromptu search. Masamo on the other hand just spent his time throwing rocks into to the river trying his hardest to make each rock splash as much as possible.
A project complete
The garage and front and back doors to the house are done being painted! This was a big project for me. I did have help (from my dad, my brother in law Scott, Jason and of course the boys) but for the most part this was my doing! I am proud of the work done and the final result!
Front door repainted (it's a very dark green)
The garage BEFORE the painting
The garage AFTER the painting!
Sibling bonding
I caught Ella reading to Masamo and David the other day and I had to snap a photo.
Also, if you didn’t know, I’m enjoying having a pair of sons at home. Here they are in their shirts that I just had to get for them!
Masamo
Here’s a video of just after Ella and David were doing their the tractor riding. I had the viewscreen on the video camera flipped so that Masamo could see himself being video taped. It just gives you a little glimpse of Masamo.
He has really picked up on manners. He didn’t want me touching a boo-boo on his foot the other day and when I was going to put on a band-aid on it he was saying “No thank you! No thank you!”
We’ve also decided to cut Masamo’s nap out of his schedule. He has been hard to put to sleep because he would be awake for 1-2 hours at bedtime. Since we nixed the nap he goes almost straight to sleep at the exact same time each night. I figure he’s getting the same amount of sleep either way!
Masamo has taken to singing, it's so cute! He was singing "Ashes, ashes, we all fall down!" from Ring around the Rosie BUT when he says it, it sounds more like "A** Sh**, A** Sh**, we all fall down!" It’s hilarious listening to him!
More on Masamo’s speech…. He’s a parrot! He repeats just about everything that is said around him, this includes inflection and tone! It can get frustrating when you’re asking him a question and he’s just repeating it back to you. Oh well, just part of the learning process!
One last thing, Masamo has learned to say “cheese” when I’m taking a picture so here’s hoping for more smiling pictures of him!
